2018 is coming to an end. What did technology teach us in 2018? That’s what I would like to examine in today’s post.
Siri got an upgrade. Google and Apple entered the arena. Alexa continues to dominate. AI devices are becoming increasingly popular thanks to the marketing efforts during 2018. While I personally don’t think they are ready for prime time, there are things they can do that are quite helpful.
I routinely ask Alexa about the weather (daily). I also have Alexa add items to my shopping list. She is even smart enough not to add the same item twice. It is amazing!
It is my belief that smart home devices like plugs, etc. will eventually revolutionize how we operate at home, but for now, these devices are far too expensive.
Bitcoin was a big newsmaker during 2018. It brought some good news and some bad news as well. Many are skeptical about this new form of currency while others are all in. We shall wait and see what happens in this arena.
Companies like Google and Facebook took major hits over privacy concerns. The US Senate held hearings on the topic. Everyone is concerned. We are left to wonder what the endgame will be. Should data be considered our property? That is a question that needs to be answered.
The debate on ethics will flare up again as AI devices become more mainstream. Who will be to blame if an artificial intelligence unit performs an illegal act? Do AI bots need any regulations? Will they be able to take over all the human jobs?
2018 was an exciting year for technology and 2019 promises to be just as exciting. I will revisit this topic next December, but until then, enjoy the new trends in technology coming your way!
